Naoto Yamagishi, from a Forest Cavern

Naoto Yamagishi is in search of music before its formally defined by words and concepts. A music free from formal constraints, traveling between places with flowing motions and sounds initiating from daily life – its rhythms, sonority and space. Naoto started drumming at the age of 13 and studied under Takuya Abe in Japan. He collaborates with various artists regardless of genres – musicians, dancers, poet, photographers, calligraphers, Ikebana the Japanese flower arrangement artist and media artists – from Japan and overseas. His major projects include ‘Shoju’ (松樹) with a Japanese calligrapher Setsuhi Shiraishi, an Ikebana flower arrangement artist Oshun Tsukagoshi and Biwa player Rieko Fujitaka, ‘En Route’ with a painter Akiko Ueda, ‘usva’ with Lauri Hyvärinen / guitar & Jone Takamäki / wind instruments ( Finland ) , ‘Aru’ with a dancer Mamiko Hosokawa, and more. In 2018, he founded the collective Toyomu based in Saitama pref, is organizing the concert series in Tokyo and the tour in Japan for the artists overseas. And he founded a label "Yabuki Records" in 2020.
